Dwayne Johnson (The Rock) bulked up his physique for his new film The Smashing Machine to portray legendary fighter Mark Kerr, but now he's set to undergo another extreme transformation. He will lose weight and completely change his appearance to play the ‘eccentric, whimsical septuagenarian’ Chicken Man in a movie tentatively titled Lizard Music.
When The Rock attended the Venice Film Festival, his noticeably leaner figure sparked external speculation about his health. In reality, he had already shed the 13kg of muscle he had gained for the role of Mark, yet he still looked so robust that “he seemed as if he could deadlift a Hummer.” Laughing, he said he still needs to lose more weight: “I’m very excited to go through another transformation again, just like in The Smashing Machine. But this time it means I’ll have to eat less chicken!”
The Rock admitted that he had indeed become “typecast” over the past few years: “I allowed myself to be confined to certain roles. For me, The Smashing Machine was liberating.” The biographical fighting film not only showcases blood and intensity, but also authentically portrays Mark’s dark side, including his toxic relationship with his girlfriend and substance abuse. “We just hope audiences can accept and enjoy it.” But he adds: “Even if you don’t like it, that’s okay—maybe you’ll like the next one.”
