(Thailand, 10th) – Seven Chinese men were arrested by police for illegally working in Thailand while holding tourist visas.
According to Thai media reports on the 8th, the Thai Tourist Police conducted a surprise inspection of a barbershop located on Ratchadaphisek Road in downtown Bangkok and arrested seven Chinese men on the spot.
Previously, acting on instructions from higher authorities, the Thai Tourist Police Bureau conducted an investigation into foreigners suspected of illegally working in Thailand while on tourist visas. The investigation found that several Chinese men were working as barbers at the aforementioned barbershop. The police sent plainclothes officers pretending to be customers for an undercover visit, where they found Chinese barbers cutting customers’ hair. The police immediately took photos and videos as evidence. They then identified themselves and requested to check documents.
Upon inspection, all seven Chinese barbers in the shop had entered Thailand with tourist visas and did not possess legal work permits. The police immediately took them into custody and will charge them for “working illegally in Thailand without a work permit” and “engaging in occupations restricted to Thai nationals.”
The Thai authorities have listed 40 types of local occupations that are prohibited for foreigners, including barbering and beauty services.
From August 4th to 8th, Thai police carried out a nationwide operation targeting illegal immigrants, fugitives, and related offenses.
Since July last year, Thailand has allowed tourists from 93 countries to stay for up to 60 days without applying for a visa, for tourism purposes.
