Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar stated that the 2024 National Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Council, at its meeting today, has approved the proposal for a national Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) strategic plan.

He said the aim of developing this plan is to allow Malaysian companies to comply with ESG regulations and submit reports in phases, and even go beyond compliance levels, thus creating competitive advantages and sustainable development.

“I mentioned the need to ensure that small and medium-sized enterprises do not incur high costs in complying with ESG guidelines, and therefore suggested that public companies, multinational corporations, and government-linked companies provide assistance for ESG training.

“This is very important to support small and medium-sized enterprises within their respective value chains, as the relevant departments should strengthen appropriate training programs for target companies.”

Anwar stated this in a Facebook post after chairing the meeting.

He said the meeting was informed of Malaysia's encouraging progress on the current performance of national SDG indicators, with an expectation to achieve 43% of the sustainable development goals by 2030, exceeding the global average prediction level of 17%.

“The Anwar government remains committed to the implementation of national SDG indicators, which aligns with the objectives of a prosperous economy, and the overall national measures are very important for strengthening and improving the initiatives already established.”
