(Miri 31st) Regarding the incident of independent school students being denied loans by the Sarawak Foundation, Kelvin Hii Shin Yang, the deputy chief of the Sarawak United People's Party Youth Central Committee, expressed regret and is very concerned about this issue. He regrets not only that the student could not obtain the loan but also that the Sarawak DAP blamed the Sarawak government for only verbally recognizing the independent Chinese school diploma, which is a misleading accusation.
Kelvin Hii Shin Yang stated that the Sarawak Foundation had already issued a statement clarifying that the decision complies with established policy, one of the basic application conditions being that applicants must achieve at least a C in the Malay language (BM) in the Malaysian Education Certificate Examination (SPM), and there is no bias against the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) as claimed by the DAP.
Kelvin Hii Shin Yang hopes that the Sarawak DAP would publicly apologize for this matter to clear the integrity of the Sarawak government. This incident is similar to how the DAP once inaccurately accused Sarawak of going bankrupt, which is very irresponsible. The Sarawak government was the first in the nation to recognize the independent Chinese school diploma, and the UEC is accepted for civil service job applications. Moreover, with the upcoming free university education policy and the Sarawak government's assistance in repaying college tuition fees, the UEC is also accepted into universities funded by the Sarawak government. These actions sufficiently prove the Sarawak government's emphasis on independent school students and the UEC.
In contrast, despite having won 40 seats nationwide, making it the ruling party with the most elected representatives, the DAP has not fulfilled its pre-election promises to nationally recognize the UEC. Now, it is trying to pick problems with the Sarawak government, which has already recognized the UEC. Such behavior raises the question of whether their purpose is truly to help the people or if there are other political motives.
Kelvin Hii Shin Yang appreciates the DAP's concern over the issues faced by the people of Sarawak, but hopes that matters can be addressed professionally. As one of the legislators in Sarawak, there is an opportunity to directly communicate with the Sarawak Foundation to understand the situation. Why not present the problem after thoroughly understanding it and express it in the right manner, rather than just publishing articles on social media or newspapers? Therefore, it is hoped that the DAP can address issues professionally rather than creating issues against the government.
