(Miri, 26th) Last night's heavy rain lasting over two hours caused sudden flooding in multiple areas in Miri, with water levels reaching over a foot. Many drivers risked driving through the water to return home, creating worrisome scenes.
The hardest-hit area was the low-lying area in Luobin Sunshine Garden, which was swiftly covered by rainwater, making the roads look like a vast ocean. Due to insufficient drainage and continued rainwater from high-ground residential areas flowing into the low-lying areas, water levels rose rapidly, completely submerging the tires of vehicles parked outside.
Although the higher-ground residential areas only had rainwater entering garages for now, prolonged rain could potentially cause flooding inside homes.
In addition, several major roads in Miri city, such as Brock Road and Mabo Road, also experienced flooding, making it impossible to distinguish between roads and puddles, greatly affecting traffic safety.
It is noted that Luobin Sunshine Garden had experienced flooding before, but the situation was most serious this time.
Mayor: Multiple factors led to flash flooding
Miri Mayor Yu Xiaoshan responded to inquiries, stating that the city council received a large number of public complaints about last night's flooding. He noted that all-day rainfall yesterday kept water levels high, compounded by rising tides obstructing drainage, and the sudden heavy rain further triggered multiple flash floods.
He stated that the city council would explore solutions to improve the drainage system to prevent similar disasters from recurring.
