(Bangkok, 17th) — The Thai Meteorological Department has issued a warning that, due to the influence of a strong monsoon trough and low pressure over the South China Sea, the entire country will experience widespread heavy rain on Sunday (August 17). Bangkok has a 70% chance of rain, while the eastern region could see probabilities as high as 80%. Rough seas and large waves are also expected in the northern Andaman Sea.
The Meteorological Department pointed out that a monsoon trough stretches across the north and lower northeast of Thailand and extends to the area of strong low pressure over the northern South China Sea. Meanwhile, a strong southwest monsoon affecting the Andaman Sea and Gulf of Thailand is also contributing to widespread rainfall.
Key areas under alert: Bangkok and surrounding areas have a 70% chance of rain, and the eastern region has an 80% chance, with the heaviest rainfall anticipated. Provinces such as Mae Hong Son, Tak, Phitsanulok, Phetchabun, Chanthaburi, and Trat are advised to be particularly vigilant. Mountainous, riverbank, and low-lying areas face risks of flash floods and surging rivers.
Sea conditions:
· Northern Andaman Sea: waves 2 to 3 meters high, exceeding 3 meters during thunderstorms.
· Southern Andaman Sea and northern Gulf of Thailand: waves about 2 meters high, more than 2 meters during thunderstorms.
The Meteorological Department advises mariners to exercise caution, and small boats should refrain from leaving port at least until Sunday.
