The United States and Iran held the fifth round of indirect talks on the 23rd in Rome, the capital of Italy. Oman, which hosted the talks, stated that some progress was made, but no decisive outcomes were achieved.
The talks were held at the Omani embassy in Italy and lasted about 3 hours.
Oman's Foreign Minister Badr stated on social media that the talks "made some progress, but not decisive progress." He hopes that remaining issues can be clarified in the coming days to encourage the parties to move towards reaching a "sustainable and dignified" agreement.
In addition, Iranian Foreign Minister Araghchi said after the talks that this round of talks was "one of the most professional negotiations" during the peace talks between the two parties. Badr proposed solutions to remove existing obstacles and facilitate progress in the negotiations. During the fifth round of talks, various ideas were discussed, and it was decided that experts from both sides would further review these proposals. If the solutions are accepted by both parties, "there will be an opportunity to get into some detail on the matter."
He noted that due to the complexity of the negotiations, "it is impossible to resolve through just two or three rounds of talks." Given that the US has "a better understanding" of Iran's position, he hopes that a solution to make progress can be devised in the upcoming talks.
The US and Iran held the first round of indirect talks on April 12 in the Omani capital of Muscat, marking the first formal negotiations since the US unilaterally withdrew from the Iran nuclear deal in May 2018. Subsequent rounds of indirect talks were held on April 19, April 26, and May 11.
