Chinese Premier Li Qiang, in a meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Carney, said he hopes Canada will provide a fair and non-discriminatory business environment for Chinese enterprises going to Canada, and stated that China is willing to strengthen communication and coordination with Canada to jointly promote economic globalization and free trade.
According to Xinhua News Agency, on Tuesday (September 23) local time in New York, Li Qiang met with Carney. Li Qiang said China supports strengthened exchanges between the two governments, political parties, legislative bodies, localities, civil societies, youth, etc., and that through dialogue and exchanges, mutual understanding and trust can be gradually built up.
Li Qiang said that China has long been Canada’s second-largest trading partner, and this year bilateral trade has grown rapidly. China is willing to maintain and enhance this positive momentum with Canada, solve bilateral economic and trade concerns through dialogue and consultation, deepen and expand mutually beneficial cooperation in energy, green development, tourism and other fields, and better benefit the peoples of both countries.
Li Qiang further said he hopes Canada will provide Chinese companies going to Canada with a fair and non-discriminatory business environment. He pointed out that there have been many new changes in the current international situation, with unilateralism and protectionism on the rise and various restrictive trade measures increasing. The international community should strengthen solidarity and jointly address risks and challenges.
Li Qiang stated that China is willing to strengthen communication and coordination with Canada, jointly promote economic globalization and free trade, support the reform and development of the World Trade Organization, promote the construction of an open world economy, and better safeguard the common interests of the international community.
According to Reuters, Carney said he discussed the issue of steel tariffs with Li Qiang and expects to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping "at an appropriate time."
