During an inspection of a furniture retail business, officers discovered that the company was suspected of multiple violations of the Employment Order in its employment of both local and foreign workers.

These included an alleged violation of Section 12, setting terms in the service contract that contravene the law, such as not allowing employees to enjoy some public holidays gazetted by the authorities.

Other suspected offenses include violation of Section 44, illegally deducting employees' wages; violation of Section 64, requiring employees to work on public holidays; violation of Section 70, failing to grant leave on gazetted public holidays; and violation of Section 71, failing to provide paid annual leave.

The Labour Department stated that the case is still under investigation. If found guilty, the employer may face a maximum compound fine of $1,000 for each offense; if the fine is not paid, the case will be brought to court.

The Labour Department reminds all employers to remain attentive to and safeguard employee welfare, while strictly complying with the relevant provisions of Chapter 278 of the Employment Order.
