On the 6th, US President Trump officially announced that TSMC's investment in the US amounts to $200 billion (8,453.52 billion ringgit).

In the Oval Office, Trump stated that a roughly 100% tariff will be imposed on computer chips. Trump reiterated his determination to bring manufacturing back to the US, emphasizing that only by investing and setting up factories in the US can companies be exempted from these high tariffs. Trump mentioned investment plans in the US by Nvidia at $500 billion (2.11 trillion ringgit), Apple at $600 billion (2.53 trillion ringgit), IBM at $150 billion (634.014 billion ringgit), Japan’s SoftBank at $100 billion (422.676 billion ringgit), and TSMC’s $200 billion. Trump individually named many manufacturers who have returned to invest in the US.

Trump also announced in advance that all chips and semiconductors entering the US will be subject to a 100% tariff. However, if a company has already committed to manufacturing in the US, or is currently producing in the country—like many other companies—then they will not be charged the tariff.

Apple CEO Tim Cook, speaking at the same press conference, reported on Apple’s $600 billion investment plan in the US. Cook stated that TSMC already manufactures a large number of chips in the US, being both the first and the largest, and this will continue. According to Apple’s press release, as part of its investment plan in the US, the company is cooperating with Samsung and GlobalFoundries in the wafer processing segment, and with TSMC in areas such as packaging and testing.
