US President Trump stated on the 6th that Apple Inc. will make an additional investment of $100 billion (about RM 422.733 billion) in the United States.
This means Apple has committed to a total investment of $600 billion in the US over the next four years. In February this year, Apple had already announced a plan to invest more than $500 billion and to hire 20,000 more employees in the US.
Trump made the announcement jointly with Apple CEO Tim Cook at the White House.
Trump said this is “the largest single investment Apple has ever made in the United States.”
He pointed out that Apple will significantly increase spending on its domestic supply chain. Apple will build a new glass manufacturing facility in Kentucky for producing iPhone screens.
He said: “This is an important step toward our ultimate goal... ensuring that iPhones sold in the United States are also made in the United States.”
In any case, Cook noted that while many iPhone components will be produced in the US, complete assembly of the iPhone will still take place overseas.
He said: “If you look at most of the components, you’ll find that we manufacture many semiconductors here, we manufacture glass here, we manufacture Face ID modules here... We also produce these parts for products sold in other parts of the world.”
He added: “Within this year, manufacturers in the US are expected to produce 19 billion chips for Apple at 24 factories in 12 states.”
