A Ukrainian man suspected of involvement in the Nord Stream natural gas pipeline explosion was arrested in Poland on Tuesday.
According to Polish media reports and a European Arrest Warrant issued by a German court, the man was apprehended in Pruszków, about 15 kilometers west of Warsaw. He has since been transferred to the Warsaw District Prosecutor's Office, and Polish authorities will soon initiate extradition proceedings. His lawyer has also confirmed this information.
Quoting sources from Germany, Polish media noted that the suspect is a diving instructor. In September 2022, he traveled by yacht from Rostock in northern Germany to the Baltic Sea, then dove underwater and placed explosives on the seabed pipeline.
On September 26, 2022, the Baltic Sea submarine gas pipelines Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2, connecting Russia and Germany as well as other European countries, suffered massive explosions near Danish and Swedish waters, causing significant leaks of natural gas.
Investigations found that three out of four pipelines experienced leaks and were suspected of being deliberately sabotaged.
