US President Trump said on the 16th that if Hamas continues to kill civilians in Gaza, the US will "march in and annihilate" Hamas. These remarks were clearly made in response to recent incidents in which Hamas fired at Palestinian civilians after a ceasefire deal was reached between Israel and Hamas.
Trump wrote on social media: "If Hamas continues killing in Gaza, this is not part of the agreement. We will have no choice but to march in and annihilate them."
According to AFP, Trump had recently said that what the Palestinian armed group Hamas had done—including public executions and shootings—"didn't bother me too much," characterizing them as "gang members' killings."
However, Trump did not specify whom the "we" referred to. On the 15th, in a phone interview with CNN, Trump said that if Hamas violates the terms of the ceasefire, he is considering allowing Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu to resume military action in the Gaza Strip.
Since the launch of the US-backed 20-point ceasefire agreement, Israeli troops have partially withdrawn from Gaza, while Hamas further consolidated its control over the war-torn city, intensified its crackdowns, and carried out street executions of those accused of collaborating with the enemy.
Just three days ago, Trump attended a Gaza Peace Summit in Egypt to celebrate the end of the Israel-Hamas war, but developments in recent days show that the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas is extremely fragile.
