(Miri, 10th) Chief of the Democratic Action Party (DAP) Socialist Youth (Dapsy) Sarawak, Peter Hee issued a statement today saying that due to improper management, Miri City Council has not been able to properly complete garbage removal for a long time, and the street environment has deteriorated, seriously affecting the quality of life of citizens and the image of the city.
He said that recently, we have seen that Miri streets are piled with garbage, the smell is pervasive, and it has even attracted flies and pests, threatening the health of citizens. This situation is completely contrary to Miri’s reputation as a "tourist city".
Peter Hee emphasized that the city council’s explanation of the delay in garbage removal on the grounds of "contractor alternation" is extremely irresponsible. Replacing contractors should be a strictly planned and seamless process, but why did such a big mistake occur during the execution? The previous contractor provided good service, why was it suddenly replaced? Did the city council not consider the possible problems during the handover when deciding to replace the contractor? ”
He further pointed out that this series of problems reflects the obvious deficiencies in Miri City Council's management and planning, which not only makes Miri citizens pay for poor management, but also affects the city's overall image and economic development potential.
He called on the City Council to take immediate emergency measures to solve the garbage problem as soon as possible and provide a transparent and detailed explanation to the citizens.
"Miri citizens should not bear the consequences of management errors. We need a responsible and transparent municipal management team, instead of repeatedly disappointing the citizens. The City Council must take effective actions immediately to restore Miri's cleanliness and order."
Peter Hee also added that the garbage problem not only affects the daily lives of citizens, but may also have a profound negative impact on Miri's ability to attract tourists and investors.
He called on Miri City Council to disclose the specific reasons for its contractor change and whether the relevant decision-making process is in the public interest.
"We need to know whether the decision to change the contractor is transparent? Is the new contractor sufficiently capable? Has the City Council formulated a detailed handover plan? If not, this is a serious administrative negligence. ”
Peter Hee said that the Sarawak DAP Youth will continue to pay attention to this matter to ensure that the municipal council takes practical measures to solve the problem. At the same time, it will also push the government to improve management transparency and strive for a better living environment for Miri citizens.
