(Chiang Rai, 22nd) Chiang Rai Mae Fah Luang International Airport is set to launch a new terminal construction plan valued at 5.7 billion baht, with completion expected by 2032. At that time, the annual passenger throughput could reach 6 million.

Airport director, Air Chief Marshal Songchano, pointed out that the Ministry of Transport and Airports of Thailand (AOT) have officially approved the project. According to the plan, the new terminal will be able to accommodate 5 million domestic passengers and 1 million international passengers annually, a substantial increase compared to the current yearly average of 1.9 million passengers.

He stated that if the target of 6 million passengers is not achieved within 7 years, the future development of Chiang Rai Airport will face pressure. Therefore, it is necessary to rely on joint efforts from the government, private sector, local authorities, chambers of commerce, and educational institutions. Currently, the airport has signed with a consulting company to begin the conceptual design of the new terminal.

Songchano further revealed that Chiang Rai Mae Fah Luang International Airport covers a total area of 753 rai, of which 50 rai will be used for an aircraft maintenance center to meet future aviation demands. Especially by 2030, China is expected to become the fastest-growing market in global air transportation. With its land and infrastructure advantages, Chiang Rai is expected to develop into an "aero-industrial base" like Singapore, covering full-process services in aircraft dismantling, assembly, and maintenance.

It is reported that the project has already passed the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and piling works will soon commence, with the goal of transforming Chiang Rai into a regional-level "aerotropolis."
