Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz pointed out that as Malaysia is a net exporter of natural gas, the country currently does not consider energy supply or raw material shortages to pose major risks to the domestic semiconductor industry.
He said that Malaysia is a net importer of petroleum, but a net exporter of natural gas, and therefore has sufficient reserves to support industrial expansion.
“At present, we do not see this as a serious issue.”
He said this to reporters today (5th) after attending the launch of the 2026 Southeast Asia Semiconductor Exhibition.
Zafrul mentioned that currently, Malaysia exports most of its surplus natural gas, but still has the potential to utilize natural gas resources better to support industrial development, including energy-intensive industries.
Regarding supply risks of raw materials such as helium required for semiconductor production, he said the situation is currently under control, but is susceptible to global developments.
“The only issue is that whoever gets their supply from West Asia, as long as the war continues, you can foresee an impending shortage.”
