Taman Dawa Jaya Clinic Costs RM24 Million, Equipped with 28 Doctors and 148 Staff Members

(Kuching, 21st) The Taman Dawa Jaya Type II Clinic, costing RM24 million, is expected to be completed in October 2025. It will be staffed by 148 healthcare personnel, including 28 doctors (dentists and one family medicine specialist).
Deputy Minister and Minister of the Sarawak Ministry of Public Health, Housing and Local Government, Dato Sri Dr Sim Kui Hian, pointed out that this clinic is a project under the Ministry of Health's first rolling plan of the 10th Malaysia Plan, and is expected to serve 800 to 1,000 patients daily.
"This clinic will not only serve Taman Dawa Jaya but also cover the Samarahan area, extending to Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) and the Stutong district."
He said the project was successfully awarded in December 2021 after three rounds of tender. It was originally scheduled for completion in June 2024, but due to additional requirements from the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), the opening has been delayed till October 2025. Dr Sim Kui Hian revealed this in a post on social media after inspecting the clinic site on the 19th (Tuesday).
He stated that the Taman Dawa Jaya Clinic will be Sarawak's second Type II clinic, after the North City BDC Clinic. The difference, he noted, is that the BDC Clinic was locally designed and constructed to suit Sarawak’s unique needs, while the Taman Dawa Jaya Clinic is being built according to the Ministry of Health’s pre-approved standardized blueprints.
"Perhaps, in the future, Sarawak’s Type II clinics should refer to the design of the BDC Clinic, instead of using the Ministry’s standard blueprints, in order to better serve the public. This also highlights the importance of Sarawak's pursuit of healthcare autonomy."
The new clinic will have 148 staff members, including 28 doctors, one family medicine specialist, and dental personnel.
In this regard, Dr Sim Kui Hian hopes that Putrajaya will allocate sufficient manpower so the clinic can fully function.
He further pointed out that Sarawak still faces severe healthcare challenges: currently, the total number of hospital beds statewide is 4,275, but there is still a shortfall of 1,925 beds; there are 4,614 doctors, still 2,649 short of the actual demand.
"In addition, Sarawak urgently needs RM17 billion to refurbish old hospitals and clinics."
However, he also conceded that while the new clinic is eagerly anticipated, there are still logistical issues, such as inadequate parking spaces. Although the clinic can serve up to 1,000 patients daily and has 148 staff members, it only provides 100 public parking spaces.
Dr Sim Kui Hian pointed out that the completion of the Taman Dawa Jaya Clinic is an important milestone for Sarawak’s healthcare, but there is a continued need to resolve manpower, infrastructure, and logistical issues in the future to ensure patients receive high-quality medical care.
