Mount Tai Responds to 135km Razor Wire Fence: Does Not Overlap with Normal Tourist Routes

Mount Tai Scenic Area in Shandong Province, China, has installed a 135-kilometer-long rolling razor wire isolation fence around its perimeter, sparking public concerns over tourist safety, ecological protection, and obstruction of wildlife migration. The scenic area management department responded that these facilities are located in non-open areas and do not cross or overlap with normal tourist routes, and that passages for biological migration and emergency firefighting have been reserved.

According to public information, in 2022, Mount Tai Scenic Area proposed a multi-layered prevention and control system called “sky net, ground net, human sentries, and water shield,” with the “ground net” referring to this isolation facility.

In a previous article on its official WeChat public account, the scenic area stated that, based on the construction and clearing of 1,150 kilometers of forest firebreaks, an additional 135 kilometers of razor wire isolation fences had been built, blocking over 800 illegal mountain entry points, thereby achieving closed management of non-open areas, eliminating man-made hazards such as illegal crossings by “hiking enthusiasts,” and establishing a seamless “ground net barrier layout.”

An official from Tai’an Municipal Bureau of Culture and Tourism stated the facility is primarily for fire prevention. However, many netizens have questioned whether this move is “excessive,” worried that the isolation fence could affect wildlife movement, damage the ecological environment, and raised concerns about how firefighters could quickly access the site in the event of a wildfire.
