Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi spoke with U.S. Secretary of State Rubio over the phone, pointing out that the Taiwan issue is of paramount importance and urging the U.S. to exercise the utmost caution in handling Taiwan-related matters.

According to the website of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, during their call on Tuesday, Wang Yi said that Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Trump reached a series of important consensuses in Beijing this May, including the establishment of a constructive and strategically stable China-U.S. relationship, providing strategic guidance and clarifying the direction for the development of China-U.S. relations over the next three years and even longer.

Wang Yi stated that building a constructive and strategically stable relationship is what the people of both countries desire, what the international community expects, and is in the fundamental interests of both China and the U.S. Both sides should eliminate interference, overcome obstacles, and steadfastly advance along this correct path.

The press release from the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that both parties agreed that the call between the two foreign ministers was positive and constructive, and agreed to jointly implement the important consensuses reached by the two heads of state, and to continue maintaining communication in a flexible manner.

Xi Jinping and Trump previously held talks in Beijing in mid-May, after which Trump invited Xi to visit the U.S. on September 24.
