Recently, a devastating 5-alarm fire broke out at Hong Fook Court in Tai Po, causing significant casualties. However, a local YouTuber and influencer known for his outrageous behavior, Kenny, uploaded a highly controversial video to social media, claiming that the victims suffered the fire because of their ‘grave sins’ and that it was ‘deserved retribution,’ sparking citywide fury and an online siege.
In the approximately two-minute video, the influencer holds his phone and films himself. Appearing solemn at first, he begins: “Everyone doesn’t need to worry about the injured and dead in Tai Po.” Just as viewers expect sympathetic remarks, he suddenly shocks the audience, accusing the victims of having “sinned gravely and done many bad things” as the cause of their misfortune, and even asserts “there’s no need to pity them.” At the end of the video, he breaks into a beaming smile, clearly pleased with his own words.
“Everyone doesn’t need to worry about the injured and dead in Tai Po, because they have sinned gravely and done too many bad things, so they were burned to death or injured. There’s no need to worry or pity them—they’re simply receiving the punishment and retribution they deserve.”
The video soon went viral online, drawing furious comments such as, “Stepping on the dead for attention, absolutely inhumane,” and some netizens sarcastically retorted, “With that kind of look, he’s gotten his own retribution already, so there’s no need to bother with him.”
Even more infuriating, when responding to criticism from netizens, he said, “That’s the only way to get more viewers.”
Reportedly, his IG account has already been reported and taken down.
It’s also said this isn’t the first time Kenny has caused controversy. Last September, during Super Typhoon Mangkhut’s strike on Hong Kong, he was arrested by police on suspicion of theft for allegedly taking away a free-roaming cat named ‘Lele’ from Pak Tai Temple on Ma Tau Wai Road, Hung Hom.
His live-streaming channel is also known for frequent, intense arguments with his mother, described by some netizens as a “cult-like family feud.”
