(Batu Pahat, 8th) A 55-year-old businesswoman lost as much as RM571,242 after falling for a high-return investment plan advertised on Facebook.
Batu Pahat District Police Chief Superintendent Shahrul Anuar stated in a press release today that the victim came across the investment advertisement on Facebook on March 16 this year and subsequently contacted the unknown suspect via WhatsApp.
"From July 10 to 31, the victim transferred funds in multiple transactions into three different bank accounts, with a total amount of RM571,242. Later, in the investment app, she saw that her investment had grown to RM804,000 in profit."
However, when the victim tried to withdraw the money, she found her account blocked, and ultimately could not retrieve a single cent, at which point she realized she had been scammed.
The police are investigating the case under Section 420 of the Penal Code (Cheating).
The police also urge the public not to trust any investment plans that promise high returns, and to get the latest scam information from the official Cyber Crime Alert platform.
The authorities also remind the public that if you find yourself scammed, victims should immediately call the National Scam Response Center hotline: 997, so that prompt action can be taken to prevent further outflow of funds.
