On June 2 local time, a suicide bombing occurred in front of a police station in Swat district, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province, northwest Pakistan, resulting in at least 14 deaths, including police personnel and protesting civilians, and 26 injuries. The "Pakistani Taliban" later claimed responsibility for the attack.
According to various media reports, at the time of the incident, hundreds of people were gathering in the square near the police station to demonstrate against the recent surge in terrorist violence in the region. A suicide attacker tried to break into the police station but was stopped and searched by officers at the entrance, at which point he detonated an explosive device strapped to his body.
Local police confirmed that among the 14 fatalities were police officers, civilians, and the attacker himself. Many of the injured were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz condemned this act of terrorism targeting civilians and law enforcement officers, and expressed condolences to the families of the victims.
The Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS) released a security assessment report in early June, stating that despite two consecutive months of improvement, Pakistan's security situation significantly worsened in May, mainly due to escalating terrorist violence in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Baluchistan provinces.
