The EU condemned Macau’s arrest of pro-democracy core figure Au Kam San, while the Macau SAR government stated it firmly opposes the EU’s interference in Macau’s internal affairs.
According to the Macau government website, on Saturday (August 2), the Macau government expressed strong dissatisfaction and firm opposition to the statement made by the European Union’s External Action Service regarding the SAR’s criminal procedures and law enforcement actions in accordance with the Safeguarding National Security Law. Throughout the investigation of this case, Macau’s police and judicial authorities have handled everything strictly according to law, and the litigation rights of the suspects involved have been effectively protected by law.
The Macau SAR government stated that facts have fully proven that the Safeguarding National Security Law, enacted in 2009 and amended in 2023, has effectively maintained national security and Macau’s prosperity and stability. The fundamental rights of Macau SAR residents, including the right to vote and freedom of speech, are not only fully protected by the Macau Basic Law and relevant regulations, as well as the applicable human rights conventions in the SAR, but are also fully safeguarded by the SAR’s executive, legislative and judicial bodies. “Since the return to the motherland, Macau’s human rights protection has achieved remarkable accomplishments recognized globally, and these achievements must not be undermined by anyone.”
The Macau SAR government also stated that the enforcement of the Safeguarding National Security Law in the SAR is purely an internal matter for China and its SAR, and that any foreign or external organizations, including the EU, have no right to interfere. Macau will, as always, fulfill its responsibility of safeguarding national security in accordance with the law, ensuring the steady and successful implementation of ‘One Country, Two Systems.’
On Thursday (July 31), for the first time under the national security law, the Macau government arrested pro-democracy former Legislative Assembly member Au Kam San, accusing him of long-term collusion with hostile foreign forces and posing a serious threat to national security.
The EU condemned the Macau government’s arrest of Au Kam San, criticizing the move as exacerbating concerns over the erosion of political pluralism in Macau.
