At approximately 7:31 p.m. local time, an F-16C (single-seat) fighter jet belonging to Chungju Air Base crashed in the mountainous area near Yeongju, North Gyeongsang Province. The pilot on board made an emergency ejection and called for rescue.
After arriving at the scene, firefighters located the pilot at around 8:10 p.m., but rescue operations were difficult due to the treacherous terrain.
The crash led to a wildfire at the accident site. The relevant authorities have issued a level-1 response and launched firefighting operations.
The Republic of Korea Air Force stated that a detailed investigation into the cause of the accident is underway.
