Tharman: National Unity is Singapore's Greatest Hope in Facing Challenges

President Tharman noted that in facing long-term challenges such as global turmoil and changes in the domestic demographic structure, Singapore's most important strength does not come from the government itself, but from the unity and cohesion among its people.

Speaking on Friday (May 23) at the swearing-in ceremony of the newly inaugurated cabinet, Tharman emphasized that citizens must continue to rise above racial and religious boundaries and move forward hand in hand, viewing a diverse society as a strength rather than a weakness.

He said, "We must continue to be a society that shares a common destiny and cares for the vulnerable."

He pointed out that this spirit of unity has been the foundation of Singapore's continuous development over the past 60 years and is the key to overcoming crises repeatedly. He hopes that this spirit will continue to guide the nation into the future.

Tharman also called on members of parliament from both the ruling and opposition parties to remember their duties and adhere to principles. He stated, "You are elected to serve the country and its people. Stand firm in Parliament, but also respect each other. Criticize policies boldly while proposing constructive alternatives. Everyone has a common goal—to build a more fulfilling and harmonious future for Singapore."

Tharman stated that the 2025 general election resulted in a strong, capable leadership team that combines experience with new ideas, and he highly praised the fourth-generation team led by Prime Minister Lawrence Wong. He called on the people to unite and move forward with the new government.

"I encourage Prime Minister Wong and cabinet members to continue listening to public opinion, consult widely, work with the people to solve current issues, and create more hope and opportunities for future generations."
