(Seria, 28th) Dr. Zhang Guijuan, Principal of Seria Chung Hwa Middle School, stated in her speech that the smooth and successful completion of this year’s competition could not have been achieved without the long-standing support from all sectors for Chinese education and cultural activities. She hopes that participating students will continue to love the Chinese language and singing, so that music can serve as a bridge to spread Chinese culture, allowing the flame of Chinese education to be passed down from generation to generation.
She said that the Overseas Community Affairs Council has long given strong support to the nationwide Chinese song contest among Brunei’s Chinese schools, enabling the continuous organization of this event and making it an important platform for all Chinese school students to showcase their achievements in learning Chinese. She also expressed gratitude to Mr. Hsiao Sheng-Chung, the representative of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Brunei, for taking time out of his busy schedule to attend and witness the wonderful performances of the participating students along with teachers, students, and guests from various schools.
Principal Zhang pointed out that the Chinese singing competition is not just a talent contest, but also an activity that combines language education, cultural inheritance, and artistic cultivation. Through singing, students learn Chinese pronunciation, understand the meaning of lyrics, grasp linguistic rhythm, and also develop self-confidence and expression on stage. She believes that Chinese songs can shorten the distance between students and Chinese culture, letting students appreciate the beauty of the Chinese language in a relaxed and natural atmosphere.
She said it was gratifying to see students from Chinese schools across Brunei gathering at Seria Chung Hwa Middle School, making friends and connecting through song. The participating students performed to their fullest on stage, showcasing not only their individual talent but also the results of their schools’ efforts in Chinese language teaching and cultural education. She especially mentioned that Temburong Pei Yu School also sent students to participate this year, allowing everyone to deeply feel the sense of unity within the Chinese education community, as well as each school’s commitment and efforts in safeguarding Chinese education.
Principal Zhang also gave special thanks to the three judges for their professional guidance and hard work. She noted that the judges evaluated the participants professionally and provided impartial feedback after the contest, so that students not only gained competition experience but also discovered areas for improvement from the judges’ comments. She specifically mentioned that two of the judges even travelled from Miri to provide their valuable insight and professional evaluation, adding to the quality and significance of this year’s event.
In her speech, she encouraged the participants by saying that although the competition will end, learning never stops. Regardless of the results, simply being able to perform on stage is itself a form of growth. She hopes students will turn their competition experience into motivation for continued learning, to keep speaking Chinese and singing Chinese songs in their daily lives, and to carry on the Chinese cultural heritage through their actions.
Principal Zhang also thanked the Chinese Language group committee teachers, all participating schools' guiding teachers, parents, and the participants for their support and cooperation. She said that the success of a competition depends on the collective effort of many people. From pre-event preparations, venue arrangement, program scheduling, sound coordination, participant training, to parents’ transportation and on-site order maintenance—every aspect requires teamwork. Precisely because of everyone’s united effort, the event was able to proceed smoothly and achieve great results.
At the closing ceremony, the organizing committee presented a certificate of appreciation to Mr. Hsiao Sheng-Chung from the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Brunei. There was also a flower presentation and the awarding of commemorative gifts to the judges to express gratitude from the organizing committee to the guests and judges. Afterwards, the judges gave their comments and handed out awards to the winners of each category. The venue was filled with applause, the winning students beamed with joy, and those who did not win also gained valuable experience and encouragement.
