Laos and Switzerland Collaborate to Enhance Quality of Vocational Education Courses

Published at May 23, 2025 09:48 am
Vocational education experts from Laos and Switzerland have recently engaged in a collaboration aimed at strengthening the course development at Laos's technical and vocational education and training institutions with businesses.

This Monday, the Department of Technical and Vocational Education of the Ministry of Education and Sports of Laos organized a capacity-building workshop on vocational education course development as part of the ASEAN-Swiss Vocational Education Initiative. The workshop focused on enterprise-based course development, attracting representatives from both government and private sectors, and invited lecturers from the Swiss Federal University of Vocational Education.

The workshop emphasized enhancing course design skills related to four priority areas: inventory management, customer service, machine tool operation, and electric/hybrid vehicle maintenance.

As part of the ASEAN-Swiss Technical and Vocational Education Training Initiative, this collaboration aims to promote reforms in the vocational education systems of Laos and Cambodia, strengthening the development of on-the-job training courses in enterprises. The initiative is dedicated to advancing industry-oriented vocational training, enhancing trainees' employability and industry relevance.

Participants in the workshop gained practical experience in workplace-based course development, marking a milestone in Laos's vocational education towards high-quality development. The meeting was co-hosted by Deputy Director General of the Department of Technical and Vocational Education of the Ministry of Education, Tingkasoulinta, and Laos National Chamber of Commerce Board Member, Vibense Titimorada.

In 2024, the ASEAN-Swiss TVET Initiative has signed a Memorandum of Understanding to launch a project aimed at improving employment opportunities for unemployed youth and low-skilled workers in Laos, with funding provided by the Swiss government. According to the memorandum, at least 1,000 Laotians are expected to receive vocational training and be placed in enterprises across the country.

The main training fields of the project include transportation and warehousing services, retail, machinery maintenance, as well as air conditioning installation and maintenance.

The ultimate goal of the project is to provide practical skills and knowledge matching the current job market demands for youth who left school early with lower levels of education and low-skilled workers, thereby enhancing their employment competitiveness.
