Mamdani Elected Mayor – Trump: New York Chose a 'Communist'

America’s Democratic Party far-left socialist rising star Mamdani was officially elected Mayor of New York City on the 5th, becoming the city's first social democrat mayor from an immigrant background. In his first press conference after winning, he emphasized that he will stand up for New York City and directly confront the authoritarian politics represented by U.S. President Trump.

Trump stated that with Mamdani as the next mayor, the United States has already lost its 'sovereignty'.

In the three-way New York mayoral race held on the 4th, 34-year-old Democratic candidate Mamdani won with 50.4% of the vote, outpacing independent former New York Governor Cuomo and Republican candidate Sliwa.

This New York mayoral election attracted more than 2 million voters, marking the highest turnout since 1969.

With South Asian heritage, Mamdani will be New York City’s first Muslim mayor in 400 years and the youngest mayor in 100 years.

Mamdani was born in 1991 in Uganda, Africa. He is an Indian Muslim who immigrated to the United States with his parents at the age of 7. Mamdani rose rapidly in the Democratic primary for New York mayor this summer, and at 34 years old, he campaigned on a platform of social welfare policies, attracting many young voters.

Regarding Mamdani’s victory, Trump said during a speech in Miami, Florida on the 5th that New York City had elected a 'communist', and due to Mamdani’s election, New Yorkers would flee from 'communism'.

“There can be no clearer choice facing all Americans. We must choose between communism and common sense.”

About Mamdani being elected mayor of New York City, Trump declared, “Last night, we lost some sovereignty in New York.”

He continued: “Our opponents provide an economic nightmare, while we deliver an economic miracle. They put America last, we put America first.”

Mamdani advocates for social democratic policies, promising to raise taxes on the rich and expand social welfare, attracting large numbers of young supporters. But he faces criticism not only from Republicans, but also doubts within the Democratic Party.

Trump has criticized Mamdani as a “communist” and a “radical left lunatic,” while Democratic Party leaders are concerned that Mamdani’s approach leans too far left and could cost the party centrist voters on a national level.

At the press conference, Mamdani said that New York is currently mired in a “dual crisis”—on one hand, facing pressure from an “authoritarian government,” and on the other, struggling with a “cost-of-living affordability crisis” due to rising housing and living costs. He said, “My job is to handle both. I will stand up for this city, and also ensure people do not blame Washington for all of New York’s problems.”

Mamdani emphasized that he will promote policies such as expanding social housing, improving public transportation, strengthening basic education and medical subsidies—making New York “a city for workers and families, not just for billionaires.” He also pointed out that New York’s prosperity cannot rely solely on Wall Street, and should instead establish a more equitable distribution structure.

Mamdani stated, “I am always willing to dialogue, and I will keep the door open for talks with President Trump.” He also emphasized that dialogue does not mean compromise, but is “for the sake of striving for the dignity and autonomy that New York deserves.”
