TVB's first-generation news anchor, affectionately known as 'Uncle Zhu', Zhu Weide, has reportedly passed away at the age of 94. A message was posted on Zhu Weide’s social media page: 'It is with the heaviest of hearts that we announce to everyone that Mr. Zhu Weide (Uncle Zhu), veteran performing arts and media professional, Hong Kong historical and cultural researcher, and traveler, passed away peacefully on July 7, 2026. Our beloved Uncle Zhu has completed his splendid life and said goodbye to us. Over the years, Uncle Zhu accompanied us through countless joyful moments on television. His iconic voice, humorous and witty conversation, and deep love for Hong Kong will forever remain in our memories. Not only was he an outstanding host and actor, he was also a guide for many people to get to know the history, culture, and anecdotes of Hong Kong. At this moment, Uncle Zhu's family hopes to handle relevant matters quietly and thanks everyone for their concern and understanding. Thank you, Uncle Zhu. Thank you for all your sharing over the years, and thank you for leaving behind such a precious legacy for Hong Kong.'
Uncle Zhu was born in Guangzhou and had deep research in history and geography. In the mid-1960s, he was introduced to television, later joining TVB and hosting many cultural and travel programs, often integrating his knowledge into the shows. He also acted in numerous TV dramas, including 'Best Selling Secrets,' 'Off Pedder,' 'Rosy Business: No Regrets,' and 'The Offliners.' In 2014, he was awarded the Professional Actor Award in recognition of his many years of contribution.
Uncle Zhu had previously been the subject of false death rumors two years ago, which his family personally came forward to clarify. They also confirmed he had been diagnosed with cognitive impairment and was arranged to stay in a nursing home to recuperate.
