International superstar Jackie Chan visited Singapore's Pei Chun Public School on the 7th, invited by the Lam Family Foundation, exciting about 900 Primary 5 and 6 students.
Jackie Chan took the stage to share memories of his childhood training: "Seeing the children perform reminded me of my own childhood. I entered martial arts school at six and a half, waking up to run at 5 a.m. every morning. While running, I had to carry a cup of water—if I spilled it, the master would beat me." He then joked, "You kids are very lucky now. Back then, teachers really did beat us. Nowadays, if teachers hit you, you can report them."
He also encouraged the students present to always have dreams and goals. He emphasized that while having dreams doesn't guarantee success, without them, you certainly won't succeed. He confessed that as a child, he didn't have any dreams or expectations, because the training was so grueling. Each day, his only thoughts were to have enough to eat and not be beaten by the master. "At school, we never had enough food. Sammo Hung would always snatch the meals—so that's why he's so fat now! Haha." The kids probably didn't know who Sammo Hung was, but the adults in the audience were all laughing.
When asked by a student if he was ever scared doing stunts, he said: "I am actually afraid when doing a lot of things. I'm not a superhero, just an ordinary person. All I know is that I have to do my best in every movie, every scene. I’ve had times when I wanted to slack off or not take things seriously, but every time a movie is released, I regret it—why didn't I do my best back then? But it's too late for regret, because the footage is already set.” With this, he encouraged the students to study hard now, so their future selves will thank them.
Another student asked why he still finds time for charity interaction. He shared that life was hard when he was a child, and every month charitable organizations would come to their school to distribute toothpaste, milk powder, toothbrushes, and 16 bags of rice for them to eat. What left a deep impression on him was when the priest distributing supplies told him: "Don't thank me, I'm just here to hand these out for others. One day, when you succeed and have the ability, go and help others." This phrase stayed with him and became the driving force behind his later commitment to charity. #
