Darul Hana Bridge and Satok Bridge Lit Up in Gold – Raising Awareness for Childhood Cancer

(Kuching, 21st) Last night (20th), Darul Hana Bridge dazzled under golden lights as Kuching joined cities worldwide in the “Light It Up Gold” campaign to mark Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.
The symbolic lighting activity attracted many families, children, and passersby who stopped to take photos, admire the shimmering golden reflections on the river, and reflect on the meaning behind the golden lights.
Sarawak Children’s Cancer Society (SCCS) executive director Jodie Sim, interviewed on the bridge, said this was the first time Sarawak participated in this international event.
“September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. This is our first time joining the ‘Light It Up Gold’ campaign. Cities around the world are lighting up landmark buildings to show support and care for children and families affected by childhood cancer.

“Here in Kuching, we collaborated with the Kuching North City Hall (DBKU), who generously helped us illuminate Darul Hana Bridge, Satok Bridge, Satok Flyover, as well as the Tun Datuk Patinggi Haji Abdul Rahman Yaakub Road pedestrian bridge.” she explained.
The event included brief speeches, group photos, and a symbolic walk across the bridges.
About 50 people attended the event, including SCCS council members, pediatric oncologists, and families of young patients. SCCS honorary advisor Tan Sri Datuk Amar Lorna Enan Muloon Chan and DBKU Director Ramzi Abdillah also attended to show their support.

“Four to five families participated, some with children still undergoing treatment, and others who have already completed treatment.
“We hope this lighting event will be a beginning, leading to more similar events in the future, and further raising public awareness of childhood cancer.” she added.
From 7 pm to 10 pm that night, several bridges and landmarks were illuminated in gold, turning Kuching’s riverside area into a golden landscape.
Jodie Sim expressed her hope that the event will be on a larger scale next year.

“Because of a tight timeline this year, we couldn’t put up banners or info boards. In the future, we hope to light up more buildings, and place information at key places, so the public can better understand the meaning of the event.”
As the crowd slowly dispersed, the golden lights continued to shine on the Sarawak River, sending a clear message: gold symbolizes strength, courage, and resilience, and Kuching stands united in supporting these young cancer warriors.
