(Miri, 4th) Sarawak's Minister of Transport, Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin, today presided over the opening ceremony of the Tudan pedestrian bridge.
During a media interview at the event, Lee Kim Shin pointed out that after the bridge is in use, the school must ensure that students and parents use the bridge during school start and end times.
He said that since SK Tudan is located next to a dual carriageway, the school requested the construction of a pedestrian bridge five years ago. This initiative not only helps prevent accidents but also alleviates traffic congestion during school hours.
He hopes that the public, students, and parents will make good use of the pedestrian bridge and protect its facilities.
This pedestrian bridge, costing 7 million Ringgit, is disability-friendly and approximately 55 meters long. Construction began on November 4, 2022, and was completed on October 10 of this year. Both sides of the bridge are equipped with about 50 meters of barrier-free walkways, enabling people with mobility issues to use the bridge.
It is known that currently, SK Tudan has 1,400 students, which causes severe traffic congestion during school hours. The completion of this bridge will help solve the traffic problem.
Additionally, after learning about frequent incidents of motorcycles using the bridge and the school having reported to the police more than 20 times, Lee called on the relevant authorities to enforce the law strictly and take the matter seriously. He hopes police or volunteer patrol members can intensify patrols to reduce such incidents.
