Greenland's autonomous government Prime Minister Egede stated on the 23rd that Greenland is "not for sale" and will never be sold.
U.S. President-elect Trump posted on social media on the 22nd, stating, "For global national security and freedom, the U.S. believes owning and controlling Greenland is absolutely necessary."
In response to this statement, Egede declared the next day: "Greenland belongs to the Greenlanders. Greenland is not for sale and will forever remain not for sale."
Subsequently, the Danish Prime Minister's office stated that, aside from Egede's statement, Danish Prime Minister Frederiksen "has no other comments."
During Trump's previous presidential term, U.S. media exposed that he repeatedly consulted advisors about whether the U.S. could purchase Greenland. In August 2019, Trump himself confirmed to the media his intention to buy the island, to which Frederiksen responded that the idea was "absurd." Greenland's autonomous government Foreign Ministry also posted on social media, clearly stating that Greenland is "not for sale."
Greenland is located in the northeastern part of North America and is the world's largest island. Greenland is an autonomous territory of Denmark with high degrees of self-governance, while defense and foreign affairs are managed by the Danish government.
Greenland's economy relies on fishing and Danish subsidies, although it possesses mineral, oil, and natural gas resources. Its capital Nuuk is closer to the U.S. East Coast city of New York than to Denmark's capital Copenhagen.
