KOTA KINABALU, July 25 (Bernama) -- The Sabah government has directed the relevant agencies to mobilise all available assets and manpower to expedite rescue and relief operations for residents affected by floods in Tawau and surrounding areas.
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said the state government's priority at this juncture was to ensure the safety of the people, while ensuring all victims received immediate assistance and basic necessities.
"I would like to extend my sympathy to all victims affected by the floods that have hit Tawau and several surrounding areas.
"I have instructed all relevant agencies to mobilise all assets and manpower to expedite rescue operations, the evacuation of victims, the management of temporary relief centres (PPS) and the distribution of aid to affected residents," he said in a Facebook post today.
Hajiji also reminded residents in affected and high-risk areas to remain vigilant, comply with instructions from the authorities and evacuate immediately if directed to do so for their safety and that of their families.
"May the situation return to normal soon. I also pray that all victims' affairs will be eased, that they will be protected from any calamities, and that all members of the rescue teams will be given strength and safety in carrying out their duties," he said.
Meanwhile, the Sabah State Disaster Management Committee Secretariat said in a statement that a PPS had been opened at the Tawau Sports Complex Multipurpose Hall to house flood victims.
The PPS was activated at 11am today, and the registration process for affected residents is underway.
In a separate statement, Tawau Fire and Rescue Station chief Jemishin Ujin said 11 victims, including two children, who were trapped by floods at Kampung Terasing Batu 17 had been rescued by a team from the department.
"All the victims were moved to a safe area using boats," he said.
He said the Tawau team was also heading to the flood-hit area at Sekolah Kebangsaan Kuala Apas Balung to conduct monitoring and rescue operations.
Earlier, Tawau District Disaster Management Committee chairman Mohd Shoffian Mohd Said declared a flood disaster in the district effective 8.30 am after receiving reports and field information on the situation.
"I would like to extend my sympathy to all victims affected by the floods that have hit Tawau and several surrounding areas.
