(Bandar Seri Begawan, 2nd) Eighty years ago, after 14 years of arduous and extraordinary struggle, the Chinese people achieved the great victory of the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, signifying the complete triumph of the World Anti-Fascist War and ushering humanity into a new journey of establishing the post-war international order and pursuing lasting peace. On September 3rd, the Chinese government will solemnly hold a commemorative conference in Beijing to collectively remember history, pay tribute to the martyrs, cherish peace, and forge the future. We express our gratitude to Commander Hazaimi of the Royal Brunei Armed Forces for leading a delegation to China to participate in the commemorative activities.
This is an article written by Ambassador Xiao Jianguo to mark the 80th anniversary of the victory in the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War.
The Second World War was the largest and most devastating war in human history, bringing grave disaster to human civilization. In the face of this catastrophe, the Allied forces and progressive forces worldwide united into a broad international anti-fascist and anti-militarism united front, ultimately raising the banner of justice across the globe. They ended the era of powers dividing the world by contending for colonies, and created the conditions for global peace and development.
In that brutal war, the Chinese people's resistance against Japan began the earliest and lasted the longest. Through 14 years of bloody struggle and the grave sacrifice of over 35 million soldiers and civilians, China supported the main Eastern battlefield of the World Anti-Fascist War. Through tenacious resistance, China strongly coordinated with Allied operations and actively supported other Asian countries and regions in their anti-fascist struggles, making an indelible contribution to the ultimate victory of the world anti-fascist war. In the later stages of the war, China actively participated in the creation of the United Nations and the establishment of the post-war international order, becoming the first founding member state to sign the UN Charter and a permanent member of the Security Council.
President Xi Jinping has pointed out that only by learning from history can we avoid repeating past mistakes. We remember history not to perpetuate hatred, but to take the past as a lesson for the future, passing the torch of peace from generation to generation. Over the past 80 years, China has always adhered to the path of peaceful development. At the founding of New China, the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence were put forth, and for more than 70 years, China has never provoked a war nor occupied an inch of other countries' territories. It is the only major power to have written peaceful development into its constitution and the constitution of its ruling party, elevating it to a national intent. China’s peaceful rise is a miracle in human history.
We proposed the joint construction of the 'Belt and Road' Initiative, committed to working with countries worldwide—especially those of the Global South—for high-quality development and win-win cooperation. We have been exploring Chinese approaches to resolving hotspot issues and have played a constructive role in issues such as the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, the Ukraine crisis, and others relating to the Korean Peninsula, Iran, Myanmar, and the Cambodia-Thailand border conflicts.
At present, the world is undergoing unprecedented changes not seen in a century. International rules and order are being eroded and undermined, bringing unprecedented uncertainty to the globe. President Xi Jinping, based on the interwoven destinies and close interdependence of nations, has proposed the major concept of building a community with a shared future for mankind, providing China's answer to questions such as what kind of world to build and how to build it. China calls on all parties to bear in mind the future of humanity and the well-being of the people, to uphold the principles of equality, mutual benefit, and peaceful coexistence, to promote the shared values of all mankind, to advance global governance based on extensive consultation, joint contribution, and shared benefits, to build a new type of international relations, and to implement the Global Development Initiative, Global Security Initiative, and Global Civilization Initiative. We will work together to build a high-quality 'Belt and Road', jointly address challenges, achieve common prosperity, and steadfastly march forward for fairness, justice, development, and progress in human society.
China and Brunei, separated by sea, enjoy a longstanding traditional friendship. Looking back at the flames of WWII, the peoples of both countries suffered under the iron heel of Japanese fascism. This shared historical memory brings the two peoples closer together. In February this year, His Majesty Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah successfully made a state visit to China, during which the two heads of state jointly launched a new chapter in building a China-Brunei community with a shared future. They emphasized stronger unity and cooperation to jointly face various global challenges and to promote a multipolar world and economic globalization that is equal, orderly, inclusive, and beneficial for all. Looking ahead, China stands ready to work together with Brunei and all peace-loving countries to cherish the victory of WWII, uphold a correct view of history, carry forward the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence, defend international fairness and justice, jointly practice true multilateralism, build a community with a shared future for mankind, and create an even better future for human society.
