(North Korea, 5th) North Korea's supreme leader Kim Jong-un stated that the country has deployed strategic assets to several 'key targets' and vowed to develop 'additional military measures' in response to the build-up of U.S. military forces on the Korean Peninsula.
Reuters, citing a report from KCNA on Sunday (October 5), reported that Kim Jong-un said in a speech at a military exhibition: 'In proportion to the United States' concentration of forces in the southern part of the Korean Peninsula, our strategic interests in the region have also increased. Therefore, we have accordingly deployed special strategic assets to several key targets... I believe our enemies should be concerned about the direction in which their security environment is evolving.'
Kim Jong-un also indicated that North Korea 'will undoubtedly develop additional military measures' to prepare for the increased deployment of U.S. forces, but did not specify the nature or timeline for these new measures.
South Korean officials say that in recent years North Korea has been strengthening its military ties with Russia and is reported to have supported Russia's military operations in Ukraine by sending troops and artillery, among other means. At the same time, Kim Jong-un is also deepening political and military interactions with China, recently traveling to Beijing to attend a parade commemorating the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, and appearing together with Chinese leader Xi Jinping and Russian officials.
