(Songkhla, 9th) The management of Hatyaiwittayalai School in Songkhla Province, southern Thailand, has announced that due to a gun-related threat made by a former foreign teacher, the school will suspend in-person classes on Monday and Tuesday, switching to online instruction.
The school's principal, Thitiwit Meechooworapong, stated on Saturday evening that, for the safety of students and staff, the school would implement comprehensive online teaching on Monday and Tuesday. The school currently has about 3,600 students and 250 teachers and staff.
According to the school’s announcement, the suspension of in-person classes stems from a threat issued by a former English teacher named “Pieter Johannes Dreyer.” The principal indicated that this individual previously taught in the school's English program.
The school terminated his employment on July 24 for violating terms of the employment contract.
Afterwards, the former foreign teacher posted a photo of himself holding a gun, along with messages and voice content, in a public group on the LINE chat application. The school considered the content as potentially threatening to students, teachers, and the school’s management.
The principal noted that the school has reported the incident to Hat Yai police. Meanwhile, the school, located on Phetkasem Road in Hat Yai District with an 81-year history, has also increased campus security measures.
According to Hat Yai police, the foreigner in question left Thailand on July 19 and has not re-entered since.
