ASEAN aims to use the "Kuala Lumpur Declaration: Guidelines on the Safe and Responsible Use of Social Media Platforms in ASEAN" as part of its collective regional effort to create a safer and more inclusive online environment.

After convening the 58th Meeting, ASEAN Foreign Ministers issued a joint communiqué affirming the commitment demonstrated by the ASEAN Ministers Responsible for Information (AMRI) in promoting the safe and responsible use of social media platforms.

The foreign ministers also acknowledged AMRI’s efforts in strengthening regional cooperation and combating fake news and misinformation, noting that these efforts align with ASEAN’s overarching goals of fostering unity and mutual understanding.

The foreign ministers also welcomed the adoption of the "Bandar Seri Begawan Declaration," reaffirming AMRI’s commitment to strategic progress in the media and communications sectors, aiming to enhance ASEAN’s cohesion and mutual understanding through the ever-evolving role of the media.

The ministers pointed out that the above-mentioned social media guidelines are currently developed solely to support ASEAN in taking a coordinated regional approach to digital participation, in alignment with ASEAN’s shared values.

Additionally, the ASEAN foreign ministers acknowledged AMRI’s ongoing drafting of the 2026–2035 Information and Media Subsequent Work Plan and the 2026–2030 ASEAN Communication Master Plan III (ACMP III), in alignment with the ASEAN 2045 Vision of “Our Shared Future” as a long-term development direction.

The joint communiqué states that these initiatives reflect AMRI’s commitment to building a responsive, inclusive, and forward-looking regional media and information environment.
