Death Toll from 6.9-Magnitude Earthquake in the Philippines Rises to 72, Severe Damage to Buildings at Epicenter

The 6.9-magnitude earthquake that struck the northern sea area of Cebu Province, Philippines, on the night of September 30 has caused 72 deaths and 294 injuries.

The Philippine National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council reported on the 2nd that the death toll from the earthquake has risen to 72, with another 294 injured. The earthquake damaged 87 pieces of infrastructure and 597 houses, affecting more than 47,000 households and about 170,000 people.

In Bogo City, the worst-hit area, disaster victims are facing numerous challenges such as power outages.

In Bogo City, many buildings in residential areas were severely damaged during the earthquake, but some residents have not gone to evacuation centers and are still staying near their own homes.

Some Disaster Victims Choose to Sleep on the Streets

Some have set up tents, while others are temporarily living in their cars. Currently, power outages have become the main difficulty for local residents.

The local hospital is now being used as a search and rescue command center, and many of the injured are seriously hurt and require infusions or even ventilators, but are currently only able to be accommodated in the hospital’s parking lot.
