The East Java Province Search and Rescue Agency in Indonesia stated on the 1st that the death toll from the boarding school building collapse that occurred in Sidoarjo Regency on September 29 has risen to 5.

The head of the East Java Search and Rescue Agency, Nanan, told the media that a total of 7 students were rescued on the 1st, of whom 5 survived and 2 died.

Nanan said that the debris of the collapsed building remains unstable, posing serious risks to rescuers and survivors.

In addition, although the Indonesian National Disaster Mitigation Agency earlier stated, based on school records, that 91 people were buried under the rubble, the agency's spokesperson, Abdul, said in a statement on the 2nd that as of the evening of the 1st, about 59 people were still trapped.

He said that since some survivors have not yet surfaced, the data is "dynamically changing."

Hundreds of rescuers are still carrying out search and rescue operations at the site. Rescuers are also assessing whether to use heavy equipment for the search. The cause of the accident is still under investigation.
