Actress Lets 3-Year-Younger Siblings Study in the Same Class, Draws Criticism for Treating Daughter as a Babysitter

43-year-old Chinese actress Zhu Dan remarried actor Zhou Yiwei in 2017, and the couple has two children. Recently, Zhu Dan appeared on a variety show and became embroiled in a controversy over favoring sons over daughters. Netizens dug up her statements on another past show, where she mentioned arranging for her daughter to take care of her younger brother, who is three years younger, by enrolling them in the same mixed-age class. This sparked heated debates.

In a past appearance on “Love’s Study Trip,” Zhu Dan shared that her daughter cared for her younger brother like a mother would. She revealed that they specifically arranged for their son to start kindergarten earlier so that their 6-year-old daughter and 3-year-old son could study in the same mixed-age class, making it easier for the older sister to take care of her younger brother—feeding him, teaching him, and more. She even described the moment when the sister held her brother, saying it felt just like a mother holding her child, and praised her daughter for being very “sensible.” After her comments, the other guests on the show looked surprised, and Wang Yanlin remarked that he had seen similar videos that made him want to cry. Feeling distressed, he emphasized that he would never let his daughter take care of her younger brother because “it’s too exhausting for her.”

Zhu Dan’s parenting style has drawn a lot of criticism from netizens, who argue that it’s unfair to expect such a young girl to take on the responsibility of caring for her sibling. Critiques poured in: “Is this how Zhu herself was raised?”, “Wang Yanlin seems shocked—he probably didn’t expect someone would treat their daughter this way,” “Has she forgotten that her daughter only just started kindergarten and is still a little child herself? And now she has to take care of her brother?”, “This is just outright favoritism towards boys in both mindset and actions,” and “Isn’t she a woman herself? How could she do this to her own daughter?”

The controversy surrounding Zhu Dan escalated further after her comments on the show “50 Kilometers Taohuawu.” In this instance, she mentioned that chicken legs should be given to two male guests, while chicken wings should go to two female celebrities, Ouyang Nana and Ning Jing. Her distribution sparked controversy and made the scene awkward, with Ning Jing calling out Zhu Dan on the spot, asking if this showed “a preference for boys.” Zhu Dan candidly admitted “a little,” claiming it was because of the attraction between opposite sexes that she had such a preference. This statement again drew criticism from netizens.
