(Bandar Seri Begawan, 27th) His Majesty the Sultan of Brunei calls on all citizens and religious leaders to continue working together to safeguard the precious blessings bestowed by Allah.
In his address for the Islamic year 1447 Hijrah New Year last night, His Majesty emphasized that although Artificial Intelligence (AI) is widely regarded as a positive development, people must nonetheless remain highly vigilant. His Majesty warned that if AI were to fall into the hands of irresponsible individuals, it could spread like a virus and cause harm.
His Majesty pointed out that today’s world is filled with various crises and turmoil, making it even more important to remain alert and guard against potential negative influence. He likened the rapid development of AI to an “immigrant” that has deeply penetrated daily life. Although this technology brings benefits to many fields, if misused, it can spread false ideas, distort human thinking, and even shake people’s faith. His Majesty described it as a “virus infecting minds and souls.”
The Sultan stated that with the guidance of Almighty Allah, Brunei continues to move toward prosperity in peace and stability. He reflected deeply: “Why are we able to continuously enjoy such blessings? It is because we adhere to Islamic teachings and integrate them into national governance; we abide by religious principles and steer clear of the prohibited. This demonstrates that faith and devotion are flourishing on this holy land of Brunei.”
His Majesty specifically quoted from the Quran, Surah 96 (Al-Alaq): “If the people of the towns had believed and feared Allah, We would indeed have opened up blessings upon them from heaven and earth; but they denied the messengers, so We seized them for what they used to earn.”
His Majesty pointed out that blessings encompass multiple aspects, including national peace, social prosperity, people’s unity, and respect for authority. These blessings must be cherished and protected.
He further emphasized that to continue maintaining blessings, the country must uphold faith and devotion. However, he also acknowledged that the rapid evolution of modern technology and cultural trends has brought many challenges.
His Majesty noted that while AI is widely applied, it has also contributed to the phenomenon of blurred truths. Some even exploit AI to disseminate false information and slander on social media, which not only damages social harmony but may also erode religious faith and traditional values.
His Majesty solemnly stated: “We must protect ourselves from these harms of slander and falsity—not only to defend our faith but also to deepen our understanding of religion.”
For this reason, His Majesty once again called on religious leaders and preachers to continue their mission, guiding the public on the path of faith and devotion, so that everyone, without exception, may be showered in Allah’s grace.
His Majesty expressed deep gratitude for the peace and happiness Allah has bestowed upon the nation, allowing citizens to celebrate the Islamic New Year 1447. He prayed that the coming year would bring more blessings to all and continue to protect the country’s peace and prosperity.
Finally, His Majesty the Sultan and royal family members extended New Year greetings to the entire nation, praying for Allah’s continued blessings and the safeguarding of national peace.
