17-year-old Chinese actress Huang Yangdiantian shared her outfit for her coming-of-age ceremony in May, wearing her mother’s emerald earrings. Netizens suspected the earrings were from the British jewelry brand GRAFF, valued at 2.3 million yuan (about 1.36 million ringgit), questioning how her father, a civil servant, could afford such luxury. The incident drew the attention of Chinese authorities and led to an official investigation.
After two months, the results were finally announced: the earrings turned out to be imitation glass pieces, worth only about 100 yuan (about 59 ringgit).
Besides the jewelry issue, Huang Yangdiantian’s parents were also investigated for illegal business activities and violating the two-child policy. Regarding the jewelry, the earrings were a gift to Huang Yangdiantian’s mother from a friend in 2016, and were counterfeit GRAFF imitations. According to China’s national jewelry appraisal agency, the pieces were made of glass, while the metal parts were copper and iron alloys.
There was also no record of Huang Yangdiantian’s parents purchasing from the brand’s official counters in China, confirming that the earrings she wore were indeed imitations, with an actual value of only about 100 yuan (about 59 ringgit).
