After Liu Jia-chang's Passing, Zhen Zhen Celebrates Her 77th Birthday and Sighs: Life Is Ultimately Emptiness

Mandarin cinema’s first-generation idol and "Little Rascal" Zhen Zhen celebrates her 77th birthday today. Veteran media friend Wang Manling shared a video on her YouTube channel to wish Zhen Zhen a happy birthday. Zhen Zhen’s ex-husband, Liu Jia-chang, passed away at the end of last year. Wang Manling said that when chatting recently with Zhen Zhen, she asked how she felt; Zhen Zhen sighed and responded, “Life is ultimately emptiness.”

Zhen Zhen made her debut in the film industry at age 16 and became an instant hit. She has been awarded Best Actress at the Asian Film Festival twice and received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 50th Golden Horse Awards. Wang Manling recently posted a video sharing many precious clips created by Zhen Zhen’s fan club, showing Zhen Zhen’s various works and looks from her debut until now. It was recalled that Zhen Zhen is from Hangzhou, originally born in Beijing. Her father couldn’t remember that Zhen Zhen’s birthday was in July and thought she was a New Year’s Day baby. Since childhood, Zhen Zhen was doted on by her father, who placed a chocolate candy under her pillow every day, allowing Zhen Zhen to wake up each morning to her favorite treat.

Wang Manling said that after Liu Jia-chang passed away, she asked Zhen Zhen about her reflections. Zhen Zhen replied that life is ultimately emptiness and that the most precious gift is the son given to her by heaven, Zhang Liheng (Liu Zi-qian). Her son often jokes that he bows to her every New Year. Zhang Liheng feels that his mother is both naive and clever—she never minds how others treat her, always treats people kindly, never holds grudges, is careless with little things but cautious with big ones. “In his mind, his mother is a warrior, raising him alone and always facing difficulties bravely.”
