On Wednesday, Hong Kong police arrested two people under the recently enacted Hong Kong National Security Law, alleging that they were involved in publishing seditious publications and receiving funds from foreign political organizations.
An official statement released early Thursday did not disclose the identities of those arrested, but media including Ming Pao cited anonymous sources reporting that one of them was Leticia Wong, owner of 'Hunter Bookstore.'
According to the statement, the two individuals arrested are responsible for managing a shop in Sham Shui Po, and Leticia Wong’s bookstore is indeed located in Sham Shui Po. The statement said the pair were arrested on suspicion of violating the 2024 National Security Law's offense of incitement to insurrection, as well as on suspicion of handling assets known or believed to be proceeds from indictable offenses under another law.
Leticia Wong is a pro-democracy former Hong Kong district councilor. As large-scale anti-government protests erupted in Hong Kong in 2019, many prominent activists were arrested and jailed during the crackdown; Wong has continued to speak out to this day.
In March this year, police arrested the owner and staff of another bookstore, reportedly on suspicion of selling seditious publications, including a biography of Jimmy Lai. These booksellers were later released on bail.
