The late diva of the music world, Anita Mui, once had a relationship with Chinese martial arts star Vincent Zhao, and they were considered one of the most high-profile celebrity couples. Director Wong Jing recently revisited this past event, confirming that the two indeed once dated, but their relationship ultimately broke down because of a joke made by a friend in the entertainment industry.
On the 12th, Wong Jing publicly revealed the real reason behind Anita Mui and Vincent Zhao's breakup. The two began dating in 1995; by then, Anita Mui was already a highly acclaimed superstar singer, while Vincent Zhao was a newly emerging actor who had just started his career in Hong Kong after coming from China. Some people in the circle referred to Vincent Zhao as "Zhuo Zhuo," hinting that he was Anita Mui's "little wolf dog," a term that deeply upset the strong-willed Vincent Zhao, and this eventually brought an end to their sensational relationship in Hong Kong and Taiwan.
The stark disparity in their social status, coupled with persistent media portrayals of Zhao "using his girlfriend for fame," placed Vincent Zhao under immense psychological pressure. Wong Jing revealed that although Zhao received considerable attention in the industry, his background as a Chinese martial arts champion and cultural differences made it difficult for him to adapt to Hong Kong's entertainment scene. Anita Mui once said before her death that if not for a certain "mysterious misunderstanding," she might have already become "Mrs. Zhao."
Before her passing in 2003, Anita Mui declined Vincent Zhao's visit, saying, "A beautiful woman who truly loves someone will always want him to remember her at her most beautiful," and at Anita Mui's funeral, Vincent Zhao dedicated a flower basket with the words "Love of my life, rest in peace," signifying how important this relationship was to him.
