(Miri, 2nd) Sarawak Minister for Women, Children, Community Wellbeing and Welfare Development Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah today inspected the temporary disaster relief center at Tanjong Batu, Pujut, Miri.
During a press conference, Chen Sai Ming stated that today she has visited the temporary disaster relief centers in Bintulu and Miri to ensure they have sufficient food.
She pointed out that the Sarawak government has increased various disaster allowances, including a food allowance of RM50 per disaster victim, because the current temporary disaster relief centers do not provide cooking facilities, so meals are provided in packed form to the victims.
“In addition to food, children’s diapers and milk powder at each center will be subsidized according to the needs of the victims, as not all children use the same size diapers or the same age milk powder.”
She mentioned that part of the standard procedure at the relief centers is to host activities to alleviate the stress of children and their parents. In terms of hygiene, each relief center is staffed with medical personnel, and the centers also provide counseling services to reduce the stress of the victims.
“Residents returning to their homes to check or clean their furniture should be cautious to avoid accidents, and any injuries should be promptly attended to, as the floodwater is not clean and can easily lead to severe conditions.”
She expressed satisfaction with the updated data on the movement of disaster victims in the temporary disaster relief centers, as it is crucial for the management units.
She said that the Sarawak government has approved an increase in disaster aid provided through the Sarawak Social Welfare Department to alleviate the burden of those affected by natural disasters. This aid, provided in the form of financial support, aims to help victims maintain daily life and meet basic needs, accelerating post-disaster recovery.
“The various aids include an initial one-time food supply (excluding drought victims) adjusted to RM75 per package for families of 1 to 5 individuals; one-time emergency assistance including pocket money increased from RM100 per person to RM200; daily clothing expenses raised from RM200 per person to RM300; dry food prices raised from RM50 per person to RM100 per person, and sleep equipment costs increased from RM100 per person.”
She also stated that the one-time school assistance, including school uniforms (uniforms and shoes), has increased from RM200 per person to RM300, and school supplies (backpacks and stationery) prices have risen from RM100 per person to RM200. Furthermore, the one-time kitchen equipment aid has risen from RM700 per household to RM1000.
“In addition, the maximum amount for one-time protection aid for purchasing temporary housing or renting houses' construction materials has increased from RM5000 to RM10000 per house, subject to the extent of damage.”
