Ukrainian Foreign Minister Serhiy Sybiha and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi held a phone call on the 28th regarding the recent attack by the Ukrainian military on an Iranian merchant ship.
Sybiha stated in a social media post that he called Araghchi that day for a frank dialogue, with the aim of preventing further escalation. He stressed that all Ukrainian actions are intended to defend Ukraine and resist Russian aggression, and are not aimed at civilian vessels or civilians.
Meanwhile, Araghchi also commented on the call via social media, saying that Iran likewise does not seek escalation, but any attacks on Iranian citizens or interests are unacceptable, and the losses caused must be compensated.
On the 25th, the Ukrainian military attacked an Iranian merchant ship in the Caspian Sea. Iran strongly condemned the incident and summoned Ukraine's acting chargé d'affaires in Iran.
On the 26th, Araghchi posted on social media that Ukraine's attack on the Iranian merchant ship resulted in the death of one crew member, describing the act as a blatant violation of the United Nations Charter. He emphasized that Ukraine's actions would not go unanswered.
