Malaysia and the Maldives have agreed to strengthen cooperation through the 2026 Malaysia Tourism Year initiative and explore the potential to expand tourism flow between the two countries, including opportunities in Muslim-friendly tourism and halal tourism.
During the four-day official visit of Maldivian President Muizzu to Malaysia, Prime Minister Dato' Seri Anwar and Muizzu pledged this commitment in a joint statement.
Anwar and Muizzu both recognized the economic potential of their respective countries and expressed confidence in the continued growth of trade, tourism, and investment activities, with Muizzu also inviting Malaysian investors to actively explore the enormous investment opportunities in multiple fields in the Maldives.
Anwar pointed out the strong global demand for quality halal products and services, expressing Malaysia's willingness to share its experience and expertise in developing the halal industry.
To enhance cultural cooperation, the leaders of the two countries welcomed the promotion of cultural exchanges through literature, performing arts, cultural training, education, and other initiatives aimed at raising public awareness of the cultures and histories of Malaysia and the Maldives.
Muizzu also thanked Malaysia for its active cooperation and friendship, which has facilitated Maldivians in traveling to Malaysia for tourism, education, and medical treatment.
The two country leaders discussed further strengthening cooperation to support the welfare of their citizens.
This marks Muizzu's first visit to Malaysia since taking office on November 17, 2023, and highlights the efforts of both countries to consolidate the long-standing diplomatic relationship established in 1968.
Earlier, Anwar and Muizzu held bilateral talks to discuss bilateral relations and exchange views on regional and international issues of mutual concern.
Muizzu also invited Anwar to visit the Maldives and reiterated his commitment to strengthening the close friendship between the two countries.
In 2024, the total trade between our country and the Maldives increased by 4.3%, from 827.3 million Malaysian Ringgit (180.9 million US Dollars) the previous year to 862.7 million Malaysian Ringgit (189 million US Dollars), making the Maldives our sixth-largest trading partner among South Asian countries.
