Malaysia and Maldives reaffirmed their commitment to deepen cooperation, promoting regional and international peace, stability, and development, especially as Malaysia assumes the ASEAN rotating chairmanship this year.

In conjunction with Maldivian President Muizzu's four-day official visit to Malaysia, Prime Minister Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Muizzu issued a joint statement, noting that both countries have reached consensus on a series of significant regional and international issues.

The leaders of both countries expressed concerns about the adverse impacts of climate change, particularly on coastal and small island developing countries.

“The leaders emphasized the urgent need for collective action to keep global warming within 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, in accordance with the Paris Agreement requirements.”

Both leaders expressed their commitment to work together on regional and international platforms and called for urgent efforts to enhance and ensure effective access to climate finance for all developing country parties under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), especially for the least developed countries and small island developing states.

They also called for strengthening the climate vision and support for developing countries before the 30th Conference of the Parties (COP30) to the UNFCCC, to be held in Belém, Brazil, in November this year.

In 2024, the total trade between our country and Maldives increased by 4.3%, from 827.3 million Malaysian Ringgit (180.9 million USD) in the previous year, to 862.7 million Malaysian Ringgit (189 million USD), making Maldives the sixth largest trading partner of our country among South Asian countries.
